56th Independence anniversary: Recession hits Nigeria Cup

…Sponsors shy away

Prevailing economic recession in the country is having a negative effect on the on-going Nigeria Cup golf competition, as prominent sponsors failed to fulfil their pledges due to financial constraints.
The organisers are regretting the absence of Nigerian Breweries and some notable players in the banking industry, who were traditionally involved in previous tournaments.
“With or without our sponsors, we have been able to put things together to make the event a memorable one. We have been managing the resources at our disposal, put together by the honourable members of the Ikoyi Club, who are determined to make the event a success. The golfers are enjoying the atmosphere of the Ikoyi Club. Everybody is working towards achieving a great goal,” Bayo Alli, chairman of the organising committee of the competition, said.
Over 160 golfers have been fighting for top marble at the 2016 Nigeria Cup, which grand finale is holding at the Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos on October 1.
The competition, which is the property of the Ikoyi Golf Community Nigeria Association, marks its 20th edition, and it is aimed at celebrating the country’s independence.
The tournament started with the juniors on September 24, followed by the caddies two days later. The ladies’ event took place on September 27, where women golfers of various handicap categories competed for the trophy at stake.
Over 200 players with handicap 13 to 28 were at the course on September 28 to vie for honours in the Nigeria Cup kitty, while about 180 competed in the Pro-Am event the following day.
The guests and veteran categories event is expected to take place today, ahead of the grand finale on the country’s 56th Independence anniversary.
