Alleged assassination: Olorunwa’s vehicles barred from motor parks

…as his friends, allies go into hiding

Following the arrest of a former chairman of the Lagos State branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Akanni Olorunwa, over the alleged assassination of some members of the union, the current leadership of the NURTW in the state may have resolved to bar his commercial buses from operating in motor parks across the state.

A top source in the Lagos NURTW told our correspondent that the leaders of the union, who received the news of the alleged atrocities of their former boss with shock, said the current leadership of the union was ready to “do away” with everything that had to do with Olorunwa in the union

According to the source, who pleaded anonymity, “The union has decided to stop all his vehicles from loading again in all units across Lagos. It is as if you don’t know what happened. Look at the number of people he killed and we were all suspecting other people.  When Hamburger was killed last year, people were suspecting Oluomo in Oshodi. Who knew it was Olorunwa that did it? Also, look at Salawe and others. He must pay for it. And the union will fight the case with whatever we have, with anyone that tries to bail him. All his buses have already been stopped from loading. He must pay for his sins.”

Meanwhile, many leaders of the union, who are Olorunwa’s close allies, have fled the state following his arrest by the police.

An NURTW member in Lagos Island, who simply identified himself as Compulsory, said, “All his close allies in the union have fled, when they heard of his arrest. We know that he has people with whom he perpetrated the evil; very soon, police will also get them. But as I speak to you, my people confirmed to me that all his people have left their houses and ran away.”

When asked about the possible implication of the development, Compulsory said, “Police need to seriously be on the ground, because supporters of those people he was said to have killed will want to retaliate against his people. This is union and we know how it is run. Politics in the union is more dangerous than politics in government. Even if police release him tomorrow, he is not safe, because the boys will want to retaliate.”

“Kunle Poly and his people are keenly watching the case and also ready to ensure that the case is not manipulated.”

Meanwhile, our correspondent gathered that Olorunwa’s alleged plan to assassinate Kunle Poly was not unconnected with a rift between them, which resulted in Kunle Poly blocking some of Olorunwa’s sources of revenue.

The former Lagos NURTW boss was arrested at Ebute Meta, Lagos, following a confession by a notorious assassin, Adeola Williams, who was arrested by the police.

Efforts to speak with the current Lagos NUTRW Chairman, Tajudeen Agbede, was not successful as he did not pick calls made to his phone. Agbede did not also reply text message sent to him.
