Apologies to Oyenusi, a one-time national thief

I lay here confused as to what our lives have become. It’s a sad moment for me, and I lost the usual comical mojo my pieces usually carry. My pants are down. I am left with no energy to bundle words from the thick forest in order to explain this insanity.

This is a straight talk and it’s sickening. Even in law, as it relates to both man and God, a sinner receives instant soft landing, when he or she recognises his or her sins. The Holy books admonish us to confess our sins, forsake them and wait for instant pardon. For God isn’t interested in the death of a sinner. But when a sinner is heady, he or she gets stiffer punishment.

IBORI IS RIGHT. HE CAN’T BE A THIEF IN NIGERIA EXCEPT IN THE UK. HE WAS ACQUITTED HERE BUT THE INSANE BRITISH LORDS DID OTHERWISE. ONLY GOD KNOWS THE KIND OF LEGAL SYSTEM THEY OPERATE. IT MUST BE A POOR ONE

The sinner who argues with the king stands longer on a trial. Just last Sunday, a convicted thief provided all available logic to prove his innocence, even in a cathedral where the Trinity reside.

To the amazement of his audience, he had a story to tell, but that Sunday wasn’t proper for such tale. A story that might probably indict all of us, hence, the need to apologise for causing him pains.

Last Sunday was just to give thanks and prayers were offered. Ha! We are in trouble. Chief Ishola Oyenusi, a convicted thief like Ibori, never had a chance to tell a story or give thanks in a mosque or church. We didn’t give him that chance.

We convicted him unjustly, probably because he dreaded us with guns. He would have had a story that would probably indict us. He would have pointed to our insanity for running after him for no reason.

Unfortunately, we were just too overzealous to kill a fine man for giving us a buzz. Why did he use guns sef? He didn’t steal for Generals, politicians and captains of industries like Ibori. His was chop alone, die alone.

James Ibori was right. He couldn’t have been a thief. No thief could have got such tumultuous welcome from his people. Only Jesus of Nazareth had such experience when he triumphantly entered the city of Jerusalem. No thief could have made it to the cathedral in such grand style.

No thief, except for the purpose of godly sorrow, could have received the blessings of a Reverend in the Assembly of God on a Sabbath day. Ibori is right. We were just too dull to understand the import of his statement. He can’t be a thief in Nigeria except in the UK.

He was acquitted here but the insane British Lords did otherwise. Only God knows the kind of legal system they operate. It must be a poor one. This must be one of the reasons we sent them away in 1960. Ibori can only be a thief if he has stolen your father’s money.

Yes, does your dad pay taxes? What audacity have you to call our chief a thief? Are there no thieves in Sokoto, Anambra and Lagos? Why the fuss about Delta? Even if he is a thief, we like him. Our thief is better than your own.

Honestly, Ibori would have been a thief if our system had said so. Let’s not malign a saint, who has some territorial integrity. He is a chief in Nigeria, but only the British Lords are qualified to call him otherwise. Can we say a big sorry to Chief Oyenusi?
