Assembly tasks universities on technical, vocational studies

The Ogun State House of Assembly has tasked the management of tertiary institutions across the country to ensure the inclusion of technical and vocational programmes in the curriculum of their various schools.
The Assembly said that higher institutions in the country should borrow a leaf from the state-owned Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, on the implementation of technical and vocational education curriculum.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Victor Fasanya, gave the charge while hosting the management staff of TASUED led by its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade, in continuation of the 2016 budget assessment visit at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Fasanya stressed that vocational and technology studies remained a catalyst for the advancement of the socio-economic development of the nation, saying that the current economic challenges affecting the nation required more focus on skill acquisition for self-sustenance and technological advancement of the country. Other lawmakers, who spoke, including Honourables Akanbi Bankole, Olayiwola Ojodu, Rasaq Oduntan and Israel Jolaoso, lauded the institution’s initiative of work-study programme, especially for indigent students as a means of giving them the opportunity to acquire academic and vocational skills in contributing to the overall development of the nation.
The lawmakers also charged the management of TASUED to intensify efforts in boosting the internally generated revenue of the institution through vocational services rendered to the people and organisations.
