Beating recession with after-work jobs

It was bad news for many Nigerians when the Finance Minister, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, announced that the country was in a technical recession. However, to cope with the times, Nigerians can do several after-work jobs to earn extra money.
Aside from income from regular/ career jobs, it is important for you to do other jobs on the side in order to make ends meet. So, the more time and energy you put in these businesses, the more money you make and add to your regular income. But if you are not proactive, you may likely go bankrupt.
Here are some of the jobs you can do to make additional income.

Pop-up Shop
While the barriers for setting up a retail shop could be very high, one way to keep costs down and limit your time investment while you keep your full-time job, is to set up an evening/weekend pop-up shop at home. More of the proceeds from whatever it is you are selling, whether daily need items like provisions or groceries, will stay in your pockets instead of going to pay for operating expenses such as rent or utilities. All you need to do is to inform neighbours and friends who stay close to you so that they can patronise you or make a small sign board outside, in front of your premises notifying people that you are rendering such services.Untitled

Baking and selling smoothies
You can start to bring in some side income by kneading flour, mastering the oven, and appeasing everyone’s sweet tooth. Depending on your experience, you can start by doing something simple on the side, like pastries with a long shelf life such as cookies, chin chin, fried plantain or potato chips.
Also, making smoothies, which is a blend of natural fruits to make juice, could bring you some income. All you need to do is to package these items neatly in airtight containers in order to avoid spill\contamination and sell to your office colleagues during lunch break or after close of work.

House cleaning
Most working class people are in dire need of house cleaners when they will be at home, especially on weekends and public holidays. This births an opportunity for anyone that has passion for such jobs to make some extra income. House cleaning services, which covers cleaning of rooms, floors, lawns, garages, windows, requires a whole range of cleaning tools such as brushes, brooms and buckets that you can easily lay your hands on to buy.

RECALL

  • Always have an option B to fall back on
  •  Earning an extra income requires some level of sacrifice
  • Hire someone to help you with your side business if your job is way too time-consuming

Home laundry service
We all wear clothes and definitely need someone to wash them. This makes the business of cleaning soiled laundry a hit. So, you can source for people, especially your colleagues at work who find it stressful to wash and iron their work clothes. You can go to their houses to wash, or collect them and take them home to your backyard for washing. It all boils down to how convenient the washing and ironing spree will be for you.

EXPERTS’ ADVICE
The CEO of JAMAB Global Services, Mr. Esho Abiodun, explained that one must always have something to fall back on because the economy is not stable. He added that asides having a regular collar job, you must have another thing bringing in money, so as to meet daily obligations in our lives.
“If you don’t have any time to run the business, you can hire one or two people to handle it for you. All you need to do is to conduct impromptu checks and stock-taking.
“That is why it is good to always start a business while working full-time, so that you can test your way into your new product or service, get feedback, validate the business idea, and start generating income before you quit your job. But if you can master the art of scaling a side business while keeping your day job, you will have no trouble succeeding once you are fully self-employed,” he said.
Another entrepreneurship and finance consultant, Dr. Folorunso Aluko, stated that it is important for potential entrepreneurs to align both core competencies and passion to help on the business ideas that could be executed while they retain their regular jobs.
“It is advisable to earn an extra income as long as the business does not affect the full time job because there is no way salary alone can sustain us. Using your extra hours productively will increase self-sufficiency. Rather than waste your free time for leisure activities, it is better to invest your time so that you can get something more since business or entrepreneurship is not all about buying and selling,” he said.
