The Catholic Archbishop of Jos, Plateau State, Ignatius Kaigama, has called on worshippers to avoid melodramatic displays that resemble modern broadway shows.
The archbishop also urged Catholic members to cease reducing the Faith to “marketplace prophecies and visions” and instead uphold “spiritual sanity and sobriety during Holy Mass.”
Speaking in Abuja, at the opening Mass for the first plenary meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Kaigama warned of the lure of the “gospel of prosperity,” stressing a return to and embrace of the authentic Catholic identity, culture and tradition which is a reversion to the roots of Catholicism.
“At a time when Christianity seems to be reduced to marketplace prophecies, visions and charismatic display of talents and wealth, Catholics must try to preserve spiritual sanity, sobriety and fidelity to our Catholic identity, culture and traditions,” declared the archbishop, who serves as president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria.
