Court remands cleric for swindling bank N.4m in Osun

Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, has remanded a 38-year-old Muslim cleric, Isiaq Sanusi, in police custody for allegedly defrauding a microfinance bank in the state.

Sanusi was accused of swindling the bank to the tune of N400,000.

The prosecutor, Rasaki Olayiwola, an inspector of police, had informed the court that the accused person committed the offence on September 4,
2013.

Sanusi, who was initially arraigned on July 8, 2014, was granted bail but since then, he had abused the bail privilege and refused to appear in court for his trial.

The prosecutor had informed the court that Sanusi absented himself from trial 10 consecutive times before he was rearrested by the police.

The prosecutor told the court that Sanusi committed another offence contrary to and punishable under Section 133(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Volume II Laws of Osun State Nigeria
2003.

Sanusi pleaded guilty to the one-count charge bearing on contempt of court.

The Magistrate, Fatimah Sodamade, convicted the accused person.

Counsel to the convict, Najite Okobe, urged the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing Sanusi.

While delivering her judgment, Magistrate Fatimah Sodamade ordered the remand of Sanusi in police custody, pending his
trial, which was adjourned till October 18, 2017.
