Customs generate N14.8b in 13months

The Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Command, has declared that it generated the sum of fourteen billion, eight hundred and seventy-eight million, one hundred and ninety-six thousand, eight hundred and eighteen naira, eighty kobo (N14,878,196,818.80) in 2016.

The Customs Area Controller, Mr. Tolutope Ogunkua, made the disclosure on Monday while briefing newsmen on the achievements recorded by the command in the last one year.

Ogunkua also announced the seizure and evacuation of 9,000 (50kg) bags of smuggled imported rice with duty paid value of N88,776,000.00 by the command’s anti-smuggling team in conjunction with the Federal Operations Union, Zone A.

Ogunkua who did not state the location and name of the warehouse said that the command would not rest on its oars in playing strategic roles of revenue collection, trade facilitation and border security.

He said that the evacuation of the rice and any other products proved to be smuggled into the country illegally was in line with section 147 of Customs and Excise Management Act, 1990 as amended.

The Customs boss, however, said that the revenue generated last year showed an increase of two hundred and seventy-eight million, two hundred and thirty eight thousand, five hundred and seventy-six naira, ninety kobo (N278,238,576.90) compared to year 2015, where fourteen billion, five hundred and ninety-nine million, nine hundred and fifty-eight thousand, two hundred and thirty-one naira, ninety kobo was generated. 

He maintained that a total of 1, 207 vehicles paid duty to the tune of N320, 329,797.00 between January and December 2016, stating that 266 packages of canabis sativa were seized and handed over to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency within the period under review. 

Ogunkua also disclosed that, “A total of 8,378 50kg bags of rice were seized within the period under review. The duty paid value of the intercepted rice is N87,153,591.00.  

“The Command made seizure of one hundred and eleven (111) vehicles with duty paid value of 136,770,011.65, a total of 1971 cartons of frozen poultry products with a duty paid value of 16,373,097.00 were intercepted. A total of 173, 25 litres gallon of petroleum products were arrested and handed over to NSCDC”.  

Ogunkua, who disclosed that N20.6billion was the target for the command in 2017 with monthly target of N1.75b, informed that the command in January 2017 generated the sum of N1,525,635,755.99 with a total of 18 seizures of a duty paid value of N20,996,177.50 in anti-smuggling activities. 

“This led to a total revenue collection of N1, 525,635,755.99 in January 2017. In the same vein, the command recorded a total of 18 seizures with a duty paid value of N20,996,177.50 in anti-smuggling activities. 

“A total of (9000) 50kg bags of smuggled imported rice with duty paid value of N88,776,000.00 was arrested and evacuated from a warehouse by the Command anti-smuggling team in conjunction with the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A few weeks ago,” he said.
