Edo LG Poll: PDP won’t produce a councillor – Commissioner

Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Edo State, Mr. Jimoh Ijegbai, has said that from all indices, he does not see any political party upstaging his party, the All Progressives Congress, in any election in the state.
Specifically, he said the opposition Peoples Democratic Party would not win even a councillorship seat in the next local government election in the state.
The Commissioner made the declaration while speaking in a chat with our correspondent.
He made his declaration on the heels of what he described as the superlative performance of the Governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki, in all sectors.
“Honestly speaking, I don’t see any party defeating the APC in any election in Edo State. It would be surprising if the APC does not win all elections in the state, including the local council
election.
“Governor Obaseki has done well and this is an indication of his keeping to all his electoral promises.
“On this premise, there is no gain saying that it would come as a surprise if the APC does not clinch all the council seats at stake during the council poll coming up in March,” he boasted.
On the clamour for autonomy for the local government councils, the commissioner said that the clamour cannot be so loud in the state considering that the state is one of the few ones in the country that allows the third tier of government to operate with financial autonomy.
“The state government does not tamper with the local government money. They have financial autonomy,” he disclosed.
He admonished all the parties participating in the forthcoming council poll in the state to operate by the rules.
“All the parties taking part in the forthcoming council elections in Edo State should endeavour to play by the rules. We should go about it in a peaceful way.
“Where there is law, we must obey that law. Let everyone go about their campaign in a very honest way, devoid of any rancour,”
Ijegbai urged.
