Edo Taskforce arrests land grabber

The Private Property Protection Taskforce, set up by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration, has apprehended one Mr. Osarobo Idahosa for allegedly violating the law prohibiting forcible entry and illegal occupation of property in the state.

The taskforce has also handed over the suspect to security agencies.

The Vice-Chairman of the Taskforce, Chief Osaro Idah, disclosed this to our correspondent while speaking on the activities of the panel of inquiry set up by the taskforce.

Idah said the panel investigated the dispute between one Mr. Christopher Akeh and Mr. Osarobo Idahosa over a parcel of land located at Evbhoraria.

The taskforce boss said Idahosa failed to provide the necessary documents to back his claim of ownership of the parcel of land during the investigation carried out by the panel.

He also alleged that Idahosa inflicted physical injuries on Akeh, who was discovered to have legally acquired the land from the Edo State Government.

“The committee faulted Mr. Idahosa for contravening the property law and handed him over to security agencies for disciplinary actions, to serve as a deterrent to others,’’ he said.

In his response, Akeh commended the committee for the transparent process and also thanked the Obaseki-led administration and the Oba of Benin for restoring sanity to the land acquisition system in the state.

The taskforce was set up in May this year to enforce the law as enshrined in the Community Development Associations
law.

The task force was mandated to monitor activities of the CDAs to ensure that they comply with the provisions of the law, prohibit the associations and other groups from seizing landed property or collecting related fees or levies.
