EKO Disco threatens to expose customers stealing electricity

  • Loses over N1bn monthly to energy theft

The management of EKO Electricity Distribution Company Plc has threatened to expose customers within its network involved in energy theft by publishing their names.
The company disclosed that it loses over N1billion every month to the activities of the energy thieves and vandals within its network.
It also identified customers involved in the dubious act as those living in highbrow areas, including lkoyi, Lekki and Victoria Island.
EKEDCP Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Oladele Amoda, disclosed that the company had been losing over 30 per cent of its revenue monthly to the activities of customers who had been in the habit of stealing energy from its network.
Amoda expressed surprise that educated persons constituted the bulk of its customers involved in stealing energy within its network.
The EKEDCP CEO said that this category of customers, who were supposed to understand the importance of paying for the electricity consumed, were the ones perpetrating such dubious act. He disclosed that most of the customers found stealing energy from the company’s network were elites living in highbrow areas.
Amoda said, “We are going to start publishing the names of energy theft customers within our operations in the dailies.
The electricity company boss said that some of the erring customers engaged in by-passing of meters, reconnection without payment and tampering with meters as well as other dubious acts.
“In order to monitor our network effectively for fault detection, clearance and track energy theft, the company has awarded contract to automate the network.
“We have introduced specialist software to be used for the supervisory control and data acquisition of customers and faults.
“This is an industrial automation control system at the core of many modern industries to track defaulters and clear technical issues within the network,” Amoda said.
He also said that the company had awarded contract to enumerate customers within the network and to bring in new ones, adding that though the exercise would be carried out in phases, every area would be covered at the end.
