Father flogs son to death for stealing neighbour’s belt in Osun

A 45-year-old man, Sikiru Adebayo, has been dragged before an Osogbo Magistrate’s court in Osun State for allegedly beating his son to death.
The police in the state accused Adebayo of killing his son after the latter stole a belt belonging to a neighbour.
Prosecutor Duro Adekunle, on Thursday, informed the court that the accused person committed the offence on July 31, 2017 at Abiodogu, Zone 7 area in Osogbo.
According to Adekunle, the accused person flogged his son, Uthman Adebayo, to death after he stole a belt from a close neighbour.
The offence, according to the prosecution, was contrary to and punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal code, cap 34, volume II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.
The plea of the accused was not taken.
Adekunle said the Director for Public Prosecution had released its advice and noted that the accused should be charged for manslaughter, instead of the murder charge slammed on him by the police.
To this end, the presiding Magistrate, Fatimoh Sodamade, asked the police to amend the charge from murder to manslaughter.
Sodamade ordered that the accused be kept in police custody till August 11, when the matter would be mentioned in court.
