FUNAAB student down with kidney ailment, needs N10m for transplant

Four years ago when Oluwayanmife Iyanu Akinsanya, a student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, was preparing for her final year examinations, she was oblivious of the misfortune waiting to befall her.
Akinsanya also did not have the faintest foreboding that she would not be able go for her one year compulsory National Youth Service Corps scheme, like her course mates, before she suddenly fell ill in October 2012.
One morning, the 22-year-old Plant Physiology and Crop Production student woke up and noticed a FUNAAB student down with kidney ailment, needs N10m for transplant heavy feeling on her two legs.
At first, she had thought that it was just malaria, but after some time, her two legs became swollen and she had to visit a hospital for treatment.
From the Sacred Heart Hospital, Lantoro, Abeokuta, she was referred to the Mercy Group Clinic located at the Panseke area of the town.
She, however, got the shock of her life when, after series of medical tests, she was eventually diagnosed with chronic kidney problem.
According to a medical report signed by Dr. T.B Ojewande, the patient has chronic kidney disease, with 300.3mg/dl blood urea, Pvc 20 and blood pressure 140/90mmhg.
The report further states that after three sessions of haemodialysis, her blood urea read 60mg/dl, creatinine 2.4mg/dl, Pvc 20% and blood pressure 150/100 .
As her health status deteriorated, she was again referred to the State Hospital, Sokenu, Abeokuta and after investigation she was discovered to have bilateral pedal oedema of three weeks and swollen eyes of five days duration, prior to presentation, with blood pressure at 130/100mmhg and pulse rate at 92 beats per minute.
In a report by Dr. C.A Erinle, the consultant who handled the patient, her abdominal ultrasound scan revealed bilateral chronic nephritis.
However, the consultant recommended that the patient should be taken to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where she spent some weeks before she was again referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.untitled
Having exhausted their savings on treating their daughter at different hospitals since she was diagnosed with the chronic kidney ailment, her parents are now appealing to philanthropic and public-spirited individuals, organisations and corporate bodies in the country to urgently come to the rescue of the undergraduate from the jaws of untimely death.
For Oluwayanmife to survive her current life-threatening ordeal, hospital authorities have said she must be urgently flown to India for a kidney transplant which will cost about N10million.
FMC, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, has already contacted a kidney specialist hospital in India for that purpose, if only the Akinsanya family could raise such a lifeline required by their daughter to live.
On her bed at the FMC, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, our correspondent observed that the once beautiful hale and hearty lady now looked lean, exhausted and distraught.
A letter by the parents of the victim, Mr. and Mrs. Akinsanya, aptly captures the current ordeal being undergone by the family over their daughter’s chronic ill-health.
According to her parents, ‘’The situation now is precarious that she has been undergoing haemodialysis three times a week at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, at the cost of Fifty Thousand Naira(N50,000.00) per session, drugs inclusive.
“The only alternative left is for her to go for kidney transplant, which she has agreed to undergo at a reputable hospital in India, as soon as possible. The estimated cost of the operations, payment for the donor or for the donated kidney, drugs and post-transplant check-up is N10million.
“In view of the cost outlay, the family has been able to raise some amount, which is far cry by all standards from what is required. In this regard, we shall be forever grateful if you can kindly assist us with your prayers and financial contribution to enable us set out for the transplant as advised by the consultant in charge of her.
“We pray that as the Lord touches your heart to give, He will never forget your labour of love and reward you glowingly. The account number for payment is: Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, 0116126538, Oluwayanmife Iyanu Akinsanya.”
