Girl, 18, lured by phone call, shot dead by assailant

An 18 year-old girl, identified as Rebecca has been shot dead by a lone gunman, who reportedly lured her out of her parents’ apartment at the Papa area of Edi-Igbesa in Ogun State.

The incident was said to have created panic and fear among residents of the sleepy community, as no such occurrence had been recorded in the area in the last 20 years.

The Point gathered that the teenager’s mother had been separated from her biological father and that the deceased was living with her step-mother at their brick apartment, where the incident took place.

Residents of the area told The Point that, the late Rebecca was a very friendly girl, who used to laugh with everybody who came her way.

According to the residents, the teenage girl was relaxing in her bedroom when she received a call on her mobile phone.

She was said to have giggled, rushed out of the house to meet with her caller. “The girl was perhaps called out by her killer, who was said to have ridden on a motorcycle to the scene.

“‘Having moved closer to the person, the poor girl was shot repeatedly on the chest and the temple. She slumped and died on the spot. Blood was just everywhere,” said a source.

Investigations by The Point revealed that the suspected assailant hid the number with which he had called the deceased teenager, a reason why any suspect has yet to be apprehended over the matter.

There are, however, speculations that the deceased teenager might have been a victim of cult gangs’ rivalry, which has become a frequent occurrence.

“You cannot rule out the possibility of a rival cult group killing the girl, because two persons wanted to have her.

She could be a victim of revenge,” said Mr. Patrick Orion, a community leader in the area.

The Point was also told that barely four hours after the incident, the girl was buried without anyone making a formal complaint to the police at the nearby Agbara Police Station.

“We were never informed,” said a senior police officer in response to our inquiry. Also, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said on the phone that the incident was not reported to the police.

“I have checked through my records, there is nothing as such. But give me time to contact either Agbara or Diya–Gate Police Post for further enquiries,” he said.

Oyeyemi, an assistant superintendent of police, said that the body of the slain girl could be exhumed by detectives for the purpose of discreet investigation, if the need arose.
