How I stumbled on acting – Scarlet

When emerging actress, Oluwagbemisola ‘Scarlet’ Shotade, went for ‘Tinsel’ audition three years ago, she did not know it would kick-start her movie carear.

Since she was already a model and singer, she told The Point that she wanted to try acting. She started dancing when she was 9-year-old and modelling at 16.

it was coincidental actually. I went for the Tinsel audition; I just wanted to try it out to see what else I could do asides modelling and singing. I went for the audition and I was picked. A week later, they called me for a movie role and that was it for me.

Her late father, Tokunbo Sotade, he was a renowned sound engineer. He worked with the likes of King Sunny Ade and she grew up in that environment. That obviously influenced her decision to pursue a career in entertainment.

Scarlet has starred in African Magic original short films, including ‘Virgin,’ ‘Scarlet (named after me), ‘President For A Day’ and ‘Crazy In Love.’

She is of the opinion that the old actors now understand that they cannot always play all roles. According to her, Zack Orji cannot play a role meant for a schoolboy anymore because he is grown.

She sees her mother as her biggest influence in life, insisting that she plays the role of a father and mother so well.

“The way she carries things, I wonder where she gets the power from. I also do a lot of praying; I don’t joke with church. My mother and God are my biggest motivations.”
