I can no longer stand my wife’s constant battering, man tells court

A Central Area Court II sitting in Jos, has granted an application for divorce filed by Mr. Kingsley Ostar Chukwu Njoku to end his fiveyear marriage, which he said had hit the rocks.
Njoku had angrily approached the Court seeking a formal dissolution of the marriage between him and his wife, Roseline Ozioma, saying that the two of them were no longer compatible.
The application for dissolution of their marriage, according to him, became necessary because Roseline Ozioma allegedly returned the dowry paid on her to her husband.
He said his wife also returned their marriage certificate to the church where they got wedded in 2012.
The petitioner told the court that he could no longer tolerate being battered continually by his wife, and would prefer the dissolution of the marriage without further delay. However, the President of the court, A. A. Abbas, while granting the divorce application, said the marriage had broken down completely.
He added that Njoku’s application should be allowed in the interest of justice.
According to the affidavit in support of the dissolution of the marriage, the applicant, said, “The couple got married in November 2012, after paying a dowry of N5, 000.00 as required by customary law.
“The marriage is blessed with a threeyear- old baby girl called Princess Nzube Chukwu Ostar Njoku.
“But my wife continued to fight me at will and will even organise people from her relations to also fight me as well. For several times, my wife has attempted to stab me with bottles and knives.
“That all these acts continued until 2013, when the woman parked her property and left for her family home. And all pleas and reconciliatory moves made to that effect were not successful.”
He added that in May 2016, “My wife with her own father and other relatives returned the dowry to him and also returned the marriage certificate to the Redeem Church, Katako, where the couple were joined in 2012”.
