IGP deploys more policemen to check Niger Delta militants attacking Ogun communities

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has deployed more personnel to the communities attacked recently by suspected Niger Delta militants in the riverine areas of Ogun State.

The additional policemen deployed by the IG to the Ogun State Police Command were drawn from.the Police Mobile Force and the Counter-Terrorism Unit from the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi said that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, BelloMakwashi, who received the men on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State, had “deployed them, accordingly, to fortify the security arrangement put in place within and around the affected communities, including Arepo,Ibafo,Imuti,Elepete,Simawa/Redemption Camp road,Ajegunle in Ogijo.”

Adejobi, a superintendent of police, added that being mindful of the rugged and dangerous terrains of the affected areas, the DCP(operations) and some senior officers, divisional police officers and heads of departments, had been scheduled to visit and supervise the newly deployed men to ensure their safety, promote efficiency and good service delivery.

The police spokesman therefore appealed to the fleeing residents of the affected communities to return as normalcy had been restored and all the affected areas effectively secured with the presence of policemen and other security operatives.

The PPRO, however, added, “In addition, the Command wishes to dispel a rumor that some armed men and/or militants in military uniform have taken over the Ogere end of Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, killing and robbing road users of their belongings.

“This news that has been widely circulated, particularly on social media, is baseless and false and should be disregarded in totality. The Ogun State Police Command does not have such a case and not even a similar case on record at all.

“The Command had ever since deployed more than 20 patrol vans with armed policemen along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, particularly at the Ogere Old tollgate and Fly-over to make sure there is adequate security for lives and property of road users.

“The Ogun State Police Command therefore appeals to the general public to disregard the rumour and go about their lawful businesses as every hand is on deck to secure all and sundry in Ogun State.”
