Implement lessons of recession, Senator Adighije tells Nigerians

A former member of the National Assembly, Senator Chris Adighije, has said that the implementation of the lessons of the current recession in the country by individuals, business organisations, and governments would assist in checking a recurrence of such an economic problem in future.
Adighije stated this while speaking with our correspondent in his country home in Okwuta Olokoro in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State. He said the lessons include financial discipline, imbibing savings and investing habit, blocking of financial leakages, creation of multiple sources of income/revenue, human resources development and youth development, among others.
Adighije, however, expressed hope that the current hard times would soon come to an end.
The former lawmaker, who was in the National Assembly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party from 2003 to 2007, expressed worry at the level of poverty and hunger across the country.
He blamed the current hardship on the economic recession, urging governments at all levels in the country to ensure regular payment of salaries and pensions to civil servants and pensioners, who he said had suffered more than any other segment of the society under the current situation.
He maintained that despite its various challenges, democracy remained the best form of government for a plural society like Nigeria because of its inbuilt mechanism for change of leadership by the people when they desire.
On the forthcoming December 17 local government council election in the state, the former lawmaker expressed confidence in the capacity of the Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, Justice Igbozurike Akomas, to conduct a credible poll.
According to him, if the entire stakeholders in the exercise would give the retired judge a free hand, the logistics, environment and support he would require, he would record free and fair results that would be acceptable to all.
