‘It’s sad that in Nollywood, merit has given way to ethnicity, religion’

Nollywood actor, Alexx Ekubo, has attempted to resolve the ethnic sentiments that come to play in Nollywood.
In a chat with our correspondent, he admitted that ethnicity had divided the movie industry such that people hardly paid attention to merit.
But, according to him, things should not be seen that way as “we are all one at the end of the day.”
He added, “I do not look at where people come from before I agree to do something with them. Last year, I did a Yoruba movie, ‘Ifedolapo’. I enjoyed every bit of it and look forward to doing more. So, it should not always be about tribe, religion, or where you come from. It should be about what you are working on at the moment and who can interpret it well.”
He also called on everyone to always the support the industry and Nigerians.
“Right now, we are experiencing difficult times. We cannot get out of this unpleasant situation unless we support one another. We need to buy Nigeria to grow our naira, but a lot of time we divide ourselves.
“Nollywood might not be where we want it to be, but we are definitely not at the place we used to be. A lot of hard work has gone into movie production lately. When you support a movie, it makes the producer to produce another great one,” he said.
