Joblessness forced me into music – Kiki

Kadijah Adejumo, popularly known as Kiki, is one of the up-and-coming female singers in Nigeria at the moment. Kiki has released a couple of songs, one of which is a current hit entitled, “Lie, Lie.”

The Mass Communication graduate of the Samuel Ajayi Crowther University says fashion is being comfortable at all times, regardless of the occasion or mood. She’s comfortable in jeans, t-shirts and sneakers.

She says high-heeled shoes are not for her, noting, “I don’t feel comfortable with high-heeled shoes and so, I don’t really like wearing them. I avoid going out in them.”

Kiki says she wears make-up only on special occasions and when the situation warrants it.

“I don’t really wear make-up, except I am doing cover shoots for my music launch,” she says, adding that she’s comfortable leaving her face bare all the time.

Concerning her fitness routine, Kiki says she visits the gym three or four times in a week, depending on her mood.

The Oyo State-born musician started her career as a performer during her secondary school days and then moved on to recording songs, before gaining admission into the university. She taught herself how to sing, do acapella and record songs. She officially started out in 2011 and performed at Nigeria Idol in 2015 in Lagos as well as at other events and shows. As her success grew and she progressed as a producer, she met Burna Boy, who appreciated and valued her sound so much that he did a back-up collaboration with her.

I actually didn’t plan to go into music upon graduation from school, but because I couldn’t get a job, music was the next thing and I am happy because it is gradually paying off

Kiki reveals that singing was not her passion, but due to the financial constraints imposed on her by lack of job, music became her last
resort.

“I actually didn’t plan to go into music upon graduation from school, but because I couldn’t get a job, music was the next thing and I am happy because it is gradually paying off,” she says.

The dark-skinned musician says her role models in the music industry are Asa, Waje, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Burna Boy and other outstanding vocalists in the entertainment world.

Her music is a blend of Afro pop, R’n’B and sometimes Reggae. Kiki has featured many artistes such as Tremor and Mayorkun in her works. She was nominated for the ELOY Awards 2015, as best up-and-coming vocalist.
