Kwara Assembly grills commissioner over planned LG transition committees

The plan by the Kwara State government to put in place Transition Implementation Committees for the local government councils in the state at the end of the three-year tenure of the current council chairmen in November may have incurred the wrath of the state’s lawmakers.
The Point gathered that the Kwara State House of Assembly had already invited the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kamaldeen Ajibade, and drilled him for hours over the matter.
The state government had recently decided to jettison the extension of the tenure of the current council chairmen and the much-talked about local government election for the TIC arrangement at the expiration of tenure of the incumbent council bosses.
But while making appearance before the state Assembly, Ajibade, it was learnt, concurred that the TIC arrangement was illegal, since the Supreme Court had already passed a judgment against it.
Consequently, the Assembly gave a directive to the Attorney General to forward correspondence to the legislature giving further insight into the proposed arrangement.
Meanwhile, The Point gathered from government sources that the current development might trigger a frosty relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government in the state, if not well handled.
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party in the state had earlier reiterated its position of lack of confidence in the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission.
According to the PDP factional Publicity Secretary, Chief Rex Olawoye, KWASIEC had already become an extension of the government.
“Our party is not expecting anything substantial from KWASIEC. In fact, it is another department of the government,” he said.
Efforts to speak with the Senior Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Communications, Dr. Muideen Akorede, for further clarifications on the issue was abortive as at the time of filing this report
