Lawyer cautions Senate on Ali, Customs boss

As the Senate insists that the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (retd), must appear in uniform before it, a Lagos lawyer and human rights activist, Chief Gabriel Giwa-Amu, has said that the lawmakers are only exhibiting deleterious abuse of their legislative powers.

Giwa-Amu, in a chat with our correspondent, stated that it was imperative for the lawmakers to avoid “unnecessary, vexatious, cosmetic, immaterial and spurious performance of legislative duties.”

He stressed that they should realise that their office was a call to greater duties than the irresponsible show of legislative powers.

The lawyer wondered why the senators should demand, request or give the directives that the Customs boss must appear before them in uniform when it was obvious that his performance was not in doubt.

Giwa-Amu argued that even if it became mandatory that they should demand such of him, it should be done in the most polite terms, “without antagonising him, which seems to be the case from the footage aired from the hallowed chambers.
