Man attacks, injures immigration officer for intervening in traffic dispute

An immigration officer, Ajibade Adeniran, has allegedly been attacked and injured by his neighbour while he was trying to settle a fight that ensued between the suspect and an unidentified motorist at the Ikotun area of Lagos
State.
Our correspondent gathered that Adeniran was returning from his office at about 8:00pm at the Ijegun Ikotun area, when he was confronted with “an unusual traffic logjam” on one of the streets leading to his
house.
Curious about what the matter was, Adeniran alighted from his car and walked up to the spot where the traffic logjam had originated.
On getting to the spot, he discovered that it was another resident, simply identified as John that was involved in fisticuffs with a motorist over a disagreement resulting from reckless driving that had left their vehicles
damaged.
It was gathered that when Adeniran arrived at the scene with other passers-by, he did everything possible to pacify and restrain the suspect in a bid to prevent him from taking any untoward action as his emotions were getting out of control.
But John, who was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, allegedly dashed to his car and got hold of a sharp object with which he stabbed Adeniran on his left shoulder.
Speaking to our correspondent, Adeniran said, “I was coming from work that night when I suddenly found traffic on one of the usual roads that leads to my street and this was very unusual. After spending some minutes in the traffic, I decided to check what was wrong only to find out that a resident of my area, John, had hit another person’s
car.
“From what I gathered, I noticed that he was the one to blame for the accident, yet he was arguing and trying to justify himself. While I was reprimanding him and at the same time trying to restrain him from doing anything nasty, because I noticed his emotions were flaring up, he just went to the back seat of his car, brought out a sharp object and attacked me, injuring me on my
shoulder.”
Also speaking, a neighbour, Mr. Tunde Oyebade, said,
“That night, we just heard that Ajibade was involved in a fight and had been wounded. Meanwhile, he was not the one; he was only trying to settle a dispute between the other men, but unfortunately, he now became the victim of the disagreement.
“Ajibade is a gentleman; he does not make trouble.”
Meanwhile, the matter has been reported at the Ikotun Police Division and the suspect has been arrested.
Our correspondent learnt that the suspect’s relations had been appealing to the victim not to take a legal action against
their kinsman.
When contacted, the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Chike Oti, said the case had not been reported at the command.
“I have not been briefed but I will contact the division for details of the case for further actions to be taken,” he
added.
