Man divorces wife for preventing him from sleeping with second wife

  • He’s irresponsible, a liar – wife

A50-year-old man, Jide Taiwo, has dragged his wife, Rukayat, before a Lagos Grade A Customary Court for allegedly being too jealous and preventing him from fulfilling his conjugal responsibility to his second wife. Taiwo told the court that each time he wanted to sleep in his second wife’s room at night, Rukayat always picked quarrels and fought with him to discourage him from doing so. According to him, Rukayat was in the habit of demanding that he spent two extra days sleeping in her own room in addition to the two days he had set aside for staying with each of his two wives.
Taiwo, however, said he was not comfortable giving Rukayat the two extra days she had always demanded in order not to be seen as being biased against his second wife.
“I love them equally. There should be no cheating. This has always been my philosophy; and I always ensured that I satisfied them”, he told the court.
He added that each time Rukayat, who he accused of frequent fighting with neighbours, had any issue with anyone, she would insist, whenever he returned home, that he must take revenge.
“If I objected to her directive, she would accuse me of inaction and then shift the fight to my side. Her weapon for fighting is kitchen knife. I have, on several occasions, narrowly escaped death whenever she vented her uncontrollable anger on me,” Taiwo said.
Taiwo further told the court that each time his wife wanted to cause trouble, she would cut his shoes into pieces.
“She had once wanted to bath me with acid but God did not allow her; there was a day she told me point blank that she would kill me and our children, before killing herself. I am tired of this woman,” he said.
But 27-year-old Rukayat told the court that her husband abandoned her and stopped performing his responsibilities.
According to her, each time her husband wanted to go out, ”he always gives me a sum of N200 and when he returned, he expects me to offer him either pounded yam or any other choice food.
“It will interest this honourable court to note that my parents are those who paid my house rent; even during the naming ceremony of our first child, I was the only one responsible for all the expenses. Again, let me bring it to the notice of the court that I never planned to bath him with acid as he claimed. What this court does not know is that my husband is an unrepentant liar”.
The marriage was consequently dissolved after several adjournments.
