Murder: Lead Varsity student to die by hanging

A 200 level student of Lead City University, Ibadan, Moshood Owolabi, has been sentenced to death by hanging for stabbing his fellow student to death.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, March 8, Justice Adegboye Gbolagunte of an Ibadan High Court sentenced Owolabi to death by hanging, for causing the death of one Seun Kolawole, two years ago.

The Physical and Health Education Department student, Owolabi, was responsible for Kolawole’s death by stabbing him with a bottle.

Justice Gbolagunte averred that the prosecuting counsel, A. Olawale, a Deputy Director in the Oyo State Ministry of Justice, had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt, adding that the evidence tendered before the court showed that the accused committed the offence as charged.

He therefore sentenced him to death by hanging to serve as deterrent to others, even as he further advised parents to always watch their children, to prevent them from misbehaving and causing harm to others.

The prosecutor had told the court that Owolabi stabbed Kolawole with a broken bottle in the neck, as a result of a misunderstanding between the two of them.

He added that Kolawole died as a result of the injury he sustained from the Owolabi’s action.

The prosecutor said that the incident, which happened on January 12, 2014, at the toll-gate area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, was punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II Law of Oyo State, 2000.
