NABTEB moves to prosecute over 2000 exam cheats

The 2,273 candidates involved in examination malpractices during the May/ June 2016 Nigerian Business Certificate/Nigerian Technical Certificate examinations will soon face prosecution.
The plan to prosecute the erring candidates was part of the new procedures laid down for the conduct of its examinations by the National Business and Technical Examinations Board.
The Registrar/Chief Executive of NABTEB, Prof. (Mrs.) Ifeoma Mercy Isuigo-Ibamhe, who disclosed this in a chat with our correspondent in Benin, said that the number of the candidates caught cheating during the examination represented 3.32 percent of the total 68,437 candidates who sat for the examinations nationwide.
According to her, the process for the prosecution of the erring candidates had been put in motion as part of the board’s post-examination exercise, saying, “We have postexamination investigation committee, verifying candidates’ scripts, which will have to follow due process. We are the first examination to successfully prosecute examinations malpractices.”
She disclosed that out of the 69,472 candidates who enrolled for the examination and out of which 68,437 sat for the examinations, 38,280 candidates, representing 55.93 percent had five credits in five subjects and above, including English language and mathematics, while 54,485 representing 76.61 percent had credit in five subjects, with or without English language and mathematics.
According to her, comparatively, 21,304 candidates, representing 30.38 percent, were certified as craftsmen in 2016 while 19,000 candidates, representing 24.73 percent were certified in 20 15.
Considering the significant role of technical education in the nation’s quest for rapid technological advancement and national development as a mean of boosting enrolment in NABTEB examinations, the registrar also advocated the full implementation of the new basic curriculum.
The NABTEB boss further called for a partnership between public and private sectors in promoting Technical and Vocational Education, while stakeholders should also make concerted efforts to wage war against youth restiveness and unemployment problem in the country through the promotion of TVET.
The three tiers of government, she said, should embark on youth empowerment programmes through which the working class and candidates would have the opportunity to learn a trade for a living and selfreliance.
