Academic activities on the campus of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, may soon be disrupted over the allegations of embezzlement and highhandedness leveled against the Rector of the institution, Dr. Moshood Elelu.
Our correspondent gathered that the current tense situation on the campus of the institution might take a turn for the worse with the National association of Nigerian Student threatening to confront the management of the polytechnic over the allegations against the rector.
The management of the polytechnic and the Student Union Government had been at loggerheads over the inability to conduct the union election in the past five months.
Our correspondent learnt that the management of the school is not favourably disposed to the conduct of the SUG election, citing security reasons for its rejection of the plan to hold the students’ union poll.
Among the students’ grievances against the rector are the rustication of the union welfare secretary, Imam Murtador Olarewaju, over alleged trumped up charges, failure to provide conducive classrooms, toilets and hostel facilities for the students use.
Others allegations against the rector include the alleged scandal over the 2010/2011 post-UTME registration funds. The inability to account for the left-over of the union dues in the past seven years and the students’ NHIS Health Insurance fee.
Speaking with our correspondent, a student union leader, Tajudeen Habeeb, who described the school’s management policies as anti-student, solicited the corporation and understanding of all relevant stakeholders towards making reason prevail.
“The union, which the school management is depriving of its legitimate dues has been using its meagre resources for what the management should do; inclusive are the provision of bore-holes for the hostels, provision of street light in the campus, renovation of a hostel block, creation of mini market to subsidise the students’ needs and the provision of walkway for the new motor park.
“It is also worth mentioning that since 2009/2010 management ,has been collecting #2000 on behalf of the union. In 2010/2011, 2011/2012, it distributed 1,400 and from 2012/2013 academic session till date it has been distributing less than 1000 naira with the 2015/2016 academic session as the lowest. It has been remitting union dues of 25,000 students out of over 50,000, which is the actual number of students the school currently has.
