National chairmanship: Ogun PDP opposes ex-gov Daniel’s ambition

… says he’s been unfaithful to the party

The Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State has opposed the ambition of a former governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, to become the national chairman of the party.

The Ogun State chapter of the party accused  Daniel of being the mastermind of the perennial crises that had rocked the leadership of the party in the state, stressing that he should not be allowed to contest for the topmost party post.

He has not shown that he is ready for the crises in the party
to end

The state PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Bolaji Adeniji, said in an exclusive interview with our correspondent in Abeokuta, the state capital, that the party in the state was not in support of Daniel’s quest for the position.

Adeniji said the decision of the party in the state not to back the former governor for the PDP national chairmanship position was due to his inability to use his leadership position at the state level to resolve the various crises threatening it in the state.

The party’s spokesperson, who further accused the two-term governor of the state of causing disharmony in the party when he pushed for the dissolution of its executives, added that Daniel lacked the leadership skills to lead the major opposition party at the national level.

He said, “The PDP in Ogun State will not support him, because Otunba Gbenga Daniel has been part of the crises in Ogun State PDP.

“Over the last many years, he has not been able to use his leadership position to resolve  the crises. Rather, he is the one backing the rebels in the party against the successive executives. For instance, he was the one that went to push for the dissolution of the Executive in Ogun State, which is illegal.”

Adeniji stressed that the former governor had not been sincere with the party and had not supported efforts to resolve the various crises in the party as he was fond of defecting to other political parties whenever it suited him and returned later to rejoin the PDP.

He said, “Even the dissolution is illegal. He was again the one that went to write the name of all his former appointees as caretaker members. We can see that he has not shown sincerity; he has not shown that he’s ready for the crises in the party
to end.

“Secondly, there are people that said that Otunba Gbenga Daniel had not been faithful to the PDP. He was in UPN at a point. At another time, he was in Labour Party and we nearly re-admitted him to the PDP shortly before the 2015 election. So, how do we now trust him with the leadership of the party.”
