Nigeria’s Aliu re-elected as ICAO president

The International Civil Aviation Organisation has re-elected a Nigerian, Dr. Bernard Aliu as its new president.
This followed his endorsement by 152-member countries attending the on-going 39th Assembly of the world aviation regulatory body.
A statement by the Head of Press, Ministry of Aviation, James Odaudu, said with this development, Nigeria will be a member of the council for the next three years before another election.

The Minister of State, Aviation, Hadi Sirika, in his reaction, said: “I feel great that Nigeria has taken its rightful place. We are being elected into Part II yet again. We have been in this organisation since 1962. We have been contributing our quota and aviation has taken the centre stage now in the world, especially post 9/11. Security has come to centre stage without diminishing safety.”

The Secretary-General of African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), Iyabo Sosina, also congratulated Nigeria and lauded development in the nation’s aviation sector while urging more efforts to attain the desired standards.
