Northern leader lambasts Sen Murray-Bruce for demanding President’s impeachment

A northern leader, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has condemned Senator Ben-Murray Bruce for demanding the take-over of the functions of the Executive by the National Assembly due to the alleged lackadaisical attitude of President Muhammadu Buhari in checking the menace of killer Fulani herdsmen perpetrating violence in some parts of the country.
Mohammed said Murray-Bruce lacked “reasoning capacity,” adding that the senator had become noted for “reckless and irresponsible” statements.
The second republic lawmaker, however, argued that there was no way democracy could exist without the rule of law, noting that there was nowhere in the constitution where it was written that the legislature could take over the functions of the Executive arm of government.
He said, “Senator Ben Murray-Bruce does not know what he is talking about. Can he tell us where it is written in the constitution that the Legislature can take over the duties of the Executive?
“There is no way you can have democracy without the rule of law. The Legislature can impeach, yes; they can pass a vote of no confidence on the Executive, but there is no place in the constitution that it’s stated expressly that the Legislature can take over the functions of the Executive.
“I have known Ben Bruce for long; he is in the habit of making reckless, irresponsible statements and this is one of such statements.”
Mohammed, however, expressed disappointment in the Buhari-led Federal Government over the management of the Fulani herdsmen crisis.
He stressed that the President and his government have failed in the handling of the matter.
He said, “As far as I am concerned, there is no doubt in the fact that the Executive arm has failed woefully in handling this issue of herdsmen killings. And for me, these so called Fulani herdsmen carrying out these killings are criminals and they should be handled as criminals, as Boko Haram is being handled. But that does not mean we should just go ahead and declare them terrorists.
“And if they have political demand, we want to know what their demands are. Like we know the demands of the Niger Deltans and the IPOB. But whatever we do, we must ensure it is within the confines of the law, because we are bound by the law.”
