Obasanjo warns tricycle, okada riders against recklessness, violating laws

F ormer president Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, warned commercial tricycle and motorcycle riders across the country to avoid recklessness and taking laws in their hands in the course of doing their business.
Obasanjo, while sounding a note of warning to the commercial tricycle and motorcycle riders, urged them to value their lives and those of their passengers by obeying traffic rules and regulations at all times.
The former president spoke when the national leadership of the National Commercial Tricycle and Motocycle Owners and Riders Association, led by its National President, Alhaji Sanni Hassan, paid him a courtesy visit in his Presidential Hilltop residence in Abeokuta, the state capital.
He said if the operators obeyed traffic laws, they would not only protect their lives but also those of their passengers.
Obasanjo stressed that the commercial tricycle and motorcycle riders and operators had been rendering very important services to citizens across the nooks and crannies of the country. He said, “You must be law-abiding. The fact that you are on a two or three-wheel vehicle does not remove you from obeying traffic rules and regulations.
“Remember, your lives and passengers’ lives are very important and you must not play with your own lives and the passengers’ lives.” The former president added that if they obeyed traffic rules and regulations, they would not incur the wrath of the traffic control agencies.
According to him, “The idea that people just restrict your movements on the way is unfair, because like every other person, you will be able to live your lives protected or molested by anybody because you are rendering a service with your two or threewheel vehicle and your services are more in demand, particularly by the people in the country.”
On his own part, the National President of NACTOMORAS, Hassan, said that the association was planning modalities on how the Ogun State Government would generate revenue from the activities of the association.
Hassan added that the association was also working on a proposal in the name of NACTOMORAS, which would be beneficial to the entire members of the association and the citizens of the country.
“We are working on a proposal in the name of the association in the next twoweeks. The plan is to benefit the entire members and Nigerians as well.
“We are also planning modalities on how Ogun State Government can generate revenue from the association “ he said.
