Ogun govt’s indebtedness to WAEC, setback for our children, parents lament

  • Delay inhibiting our chances for further education -Affected students

Parents of Ogun State students who sat for May/ June 2016 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, in public schools across the state, have lamented the inability of their children to have access to their results on the West African Examination Coincil, WAEC’s website.
According to the parents, the delay in the release of their children’s Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, SSCE, results by WAEC was already affecting their children’s preparations to further their studies in tertiary institutions of their choices across the federation.
The affected parents bared their minds on the issue following the inability of the Governor Ibikunle Amosun- led administration to pay WAEC the examination fees of the students in public schools across the state, who sat for this year’s SSCE written between May and June.
Following the state’s indebtedness to the examination body, WAEC has since withheld the SSCE results of the public secondary school students in Ogun State, a situation which has made it difficult for the students to check their results on the examination body’s website.
An inside source at the Onikolobo branch of WAEC had, last week, confirmed to The Point that the council had withheld the results of the students in public secondary schools in the state because the state government had yet to pay their examination fees.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Modupe Mujota, also told The Point that the state government was already taking steps to ensure the release of the students’ results.
But in their reactions to the development, parents of the affected students have, however, appealed to state government to hasten action on the release of the results without further delay.
They frowned at a situation where their children and wards have been forced to stay idle at home due to the non-release of their SSCE results by WAEC. The parents maintained that if their children had seen their SSCE results, they would have known the next step to take on how to further their education in tertiary institutions.untitled A parent, Morenikeji Adeyeye, whose son sat for the May/ June WASSCE at the Unity High School, Ago Ika, Abeokuta, expressed worry over the delay in the release of her son’s result, appealing to the state government to find an urgent solution to the problem.
She said, “It is painful for me not to have seen my child’s results till now. We are appealing to the state government to help us. It is not easy for us to cater for a child throughout secondary school and still find it hard to see his results at the end of it all. We want to see the results of what they have written down in their WAEC exam.”
His son, Pelumi Adeyeye, who is also affected by the development, also pleaded with the state government to settle the unpaid fees with the examination body.
According to him, “it is very painful not to have seen my results now. We beg the state government to pay WAEC so that we can see our results. We also want the state government to assist us so that we won’t be paying for scratch cards.”
Another parent, Mrs. Bose Akintade, implored the state government to take appropriate measures by paying the council in order to release the students’ results, lamenting that her child and her friend, who is living with her, were not engaged in anything meaningful by staying at home since they finished the examinations.
“As a parent, we have been expecting to see the results of our children. The government should help us to release the results of our children by paying WAEC so that we can know the next step to take. And I am appealing to Amosun to pay WAEC so that WAEC can release their results.
“As a parent I’m not happy about the development, simply because we don’t know the next step to take since I have not seen the results of my children. Since they finished their WAEC examinations, they are just staying at home doing nothing and it is until we see their results that we can know the next step to take about their going into higher institutions to further their studies,” Akintade added.
Her daughter, Tawakalitu Akintade, of llewo Community High School, stressed that she and her friends were not happy staying at home doing nothing since the examination body withheld their results.
“The government should help us to pay WAEC so that they can release our results. Since we finished writing our SSCE, we have been staying at home doing nothing. We are only waiting for our results so that we can know the next step. We want the state government to help us to pay WAEC so that they can release our results,” she said.
Ifeoluwa Oladipupo, who attended the same secondary school with her friend, Tawakalitu, lamented the inability to get access to their results on the council’s website.
