Ondo poll: Supreme Court sacks Jimoh Ibrahim

Contrary to the expectations of the Ali Modu Sheriff-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, the Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed the ruling of the Appeal Court against Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the party in Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State.

The apex court, therefore, ordered that Mr. Ibrahim be replaced with Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, who belongs to the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the party. All the objections filed by Ibrahim and his loyalists were also dismissed.

The five-man panel of justices led by the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, said all the issues raised by the factional chairman of the PDP in Ondo State against Jegede had been overtaken by the appellate court’s judgment.

But despite this, Sheriff insists he is the authentic chairman of the PDP. A Court of Appeal in Abuja on Wednesday had declared Senator Ahmed Makarfi the authentic PDP national chairman. Ibrahim had hoped that the Supreme Court would grant the appeals, which would have returned him as the candidate of the party for Saturday’s governorship election
