Osun poly sacks ASUP chairman, suspends secretary over petition

Authorities of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, have terminated the appointments of two lecturers of the school for allegedly petitioning the National Board for Technical Education and accusing the management of running the school with incompetent staff.

The sacked teachers include the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics of OSPOLY, Mr. Dotun Omisore and the General Secretary of the union, Mr. Oduwole Omotayo.

The termination of the duo’s appointments was contained in a letter dated November 2, 2016 and signed by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. B.M Salawu.

The letter addressed to Omisore and obtained by our correspondent on Monday, reads partly, “Following the consideration of the reports of the Visitation Panels to the four state-owned tertiary institutions in the state, the State Government of Osun has approved your disengagement from service of this institution with immediate effect in the interest of the state.

“You are to handover the institution’s property in your care to your Head of Department.”

It was gathered that Omisore and Omotayo were disengaged for refusing to respond to three different queries sent to them by the school’s management as a result of the petition they wrote to NBTE.

The ASUP chairman and his secretary were said to have shunned the management by refusing to reply the query received.

It was further gathered that Omisore’s lawyer wrote the school management, when the fourth query was sent to them, insisting that he would not honour the query.

Omisore confirmed his dismissal but refused to comment further, adding that he would inform the national body of ASUP before taking any step on his sack.

In a related development, the school authorities have reinstated about 20 workers of the institution, who had earlier been disengaged by the state government for one offence or the other.

The reinstatement of the workers was contained in an Internal Memo with Reference Number REG 40ɢ/VOL/31 and dated November 3, 2016.

The memo obtained by our correspondent on Monday, reads in part, “Following the consideration of the reports of Personnel Audit by the State Government of Osun that some members of staff should be reinstated to the service of Osun State Polytechnic, the entire community is hereby informed of the reinstatement of the following members of staff.”
