Pay teachers adequately to check corruption, says WAEC

The West African Examination council has harped on the need to pay teachers across the country adequate remuneration to shield them from corruption
tendencies.
WAEC Registrar, Dr. Uyi Uwadiae, stated this in a communique issued at the end of the just concluded International Summit on Examination Malpractice attended by all member-countries of the West African regional examination body.
Uwadiae harped on the need by government to pay teachers very well so that they won’t have any cause to look for alternative means of enriching themselves.
“Approaches to pedagogy should be reviewed in the light of emerging technologies so as to equip students with requisite knowledge and skills. In the light of this, teachers should be adequately remunerated to keep them from corrupt tendencies; regulations and quality standards for all schools should be enforced,” the WAEC boss’ communique partly said.
He also noted that teaching methods in schools should be devised to aid deep learning, adding that there should be retraining of teachers so as to build capacity for creative teaching.
He said this would make learning more interesting and meaningful, thereby awakening the innate abilities of students.
Uwadiae, therefore, enjoined the government to give continuous support to the conduct of examinations by considering the establishment of an Examination Ethics Committee so as to complement the efforts of examination bodies to fight
malpractice.
