Former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, on Friday held a one-hour closed door meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, the state capital.
But the former governor later told newsmen that he had come to solicit the support of the former president in his bid to become the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Daniel, who met Obasanjo at his Hilltop Residence in Abeokuta the state capital, in company with party chieftains, including Chief Bode George and the Chairman of Daar Communication, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, said he came to consult the former president on his plan.
Others on Daniel’s entourage are members of the Ogun State Caretaker Committee of the party; former PDP state chairman, Elder Joju Fadairo; Hon. Kayode Amusan; former minister of solid minerals development, Alh. Sarafa Tunji Ishola; and the party’s Director of Organisation, Deji Kalejaiye.
Daniel and the other chieftains of the PDP, who arrived at the former president’s home at about 10am, went into a closed door meeting with him for over an hour.
Daniel, however, told journalists after the meeting that he came to consult Obasanjo and to seek his advice on his ambition to run for the office of the PDP National Chairman.
The two-term governor of the state, who said that PDP in Ogun had become united and remained the party to beat in the next election, noted that his visit to the ex -president was borne out of the fact that he couldn’t take any decision without his consent.
He said, “I’m contesting the PDP chairmanship position. I’m consulting and Baba is one of the foundation members of the party and we can’t move without him.
“We have been united. You can see all of us are here. We have realised that united we stand, divided we fall.”
