Police sergeant languishes in Kirikiri Prisons for killing “Yahoo boy”

Apolice Sergeant, Pious Edem, who reportedly shot dead a “Yahoo-Boy” in the course of arresting him over an undisclosed offence is now languishing in Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos.

The officer, according to our findings, had, about three months ago flagged down the suspected “Yahoo Boy” at an intersection in the Iyana-Oba area of Lagos during a routine check, but the suspect [now deceased] who was riding on a motorcycle, allegedly declined.

The development was said to have angered the officer, who in turn, mounted another motorcycle and pursued the fleeing suspect. Unable to catch up with the fleeing suspect, the Sergeant allegedly corked his gun as passersby jeered and cheered.

Our correspondent gathered that in a fit of anger, aimed and shot at the fleeing suspect and “the volleys released from his gun eventually caught up with the suspect, who was hit in the temple, as his motorcycle swerved into the nearby gutter before he fell.”

Passersby, who witnessed the incident, were said to have asked the pursuing officer to carry the corpse of the victim as he was surrounded by a hostile crowd, who appeared to be ready for a showdown.

As the crowd surged, the killercop was rescued by his colleagues on patrol, who ferried both the corpse and the Sergeant away from the scene of the crime to the nearby police station.

Our usually reliable sources informed that it was at the police station that the killer cop was methodically questioned and the now jittery officer reportedly disclosed that his intention was not to kill the suspect but to just scare him.

He disclosed furtherthat he, however, miscalculated as the bullets meant to ordinarily deflate the tyres of the motorcycle of the deceased person hit him in the temple.

Edem further disclosed that he was serving at the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad Adeniji Adele Road, Central Lagos. His interrogators were said to have consequently disarmed the sergeant and made contacts with the office he claimed to represent.

Our correspondent gathered that the sergeant was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, MAK Smith Street, Yaba, Lagos, for further investigations.

“The no-non-sense Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, after a preliminary report on the matter, dismissed the officer, insisting that nobody has the right to terminate the life of another.

The dismissal of the officer only paved way for his eventual prosecution. “Barely two weeks ago, the police sergeant was arraigned for murder and the court ordered for his remand in Kirikiri Prisons”, the source added.

Prisons authorities penultimate Thursday told our correspondent that the sergeant had been regretting his actions, praying that “the cup pass over him as he still has the dream of coming back to the police force.”
