Power dam project: Niger communities get N1.5bn compensation

The Federal Government has so far paid over 1.5billion as compensation to the communities affected by the ongoing construction of the Hydro Power Dam at Zungeru in Niger State.
The Director-General of the state Hydro Development Areas Commission, Mohammed Sumaila Mambo, disclosed this in Minna, the state capital.
Mambo added that 32 out of 35 communities affected by the project had been compensated.
He, however, said that a total of 98 communities would be affected by the construction of the dam.
Mambo reiterated the commitment of the current All Progressives Congress-led administration in the state to ensure that people and communities affected were compensated accordingly.
He added that the payment of the compensation would be determined by the quantity of produce on farmlands, adding that payments would be in three categories, including farm produce and economic trees, areas of water coverage or occupant and houses as well as provision of social amenities.
