Secession: Include ‘exit clause’ in constitution – Okorie

The presidential candidate of the United Progressive Party in the 2015 general elections, Chief Chekwas Okorie, has advocated the inclusion of “exit clause” in the Nigerian Constitution.

Okorie explained that such a clause would make it easier and possible for any of the federating units of the country wishing to secede to do so with the backing of the constitution.

The UPP presidential candidate stated this in an exclusive interview with The Point in Alayi in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, maintaining that some countries already had such clause in their own constitutions.

Citing Ethiopia in the Horn of Africa as one of such countries, Okorie added that it was the implementation of the clause that led to the birth of Eriteria as a sovereign nation.

He insisted that such “separation” would not only be without confrontation and loss of lives and property, but would also promote better understanding among the new countries.

Okorie said, “This (exit clause) will put an end to all the agitations and clamours we have been having in this country, be they religious, ethnic or what have you.”

On the current economic situation in the country, Okorie noted that his party’s manifesto was very clear on how to move the country to greater heights within the shortest possible period.

“Under our government, the economy would have been far better than what it is today, because as a grassroots party, we know the needs of the people and how to provide them,” he said.

Calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to find a lasting solution to the situation before it would deteriorate further, he commended Nigerians for their patience and understanding.

Okorie, who is also the founder and pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance before his unceremonial ouster, said in the annals of the country his name would be written among those who founded two national parties.

He listed such Nigerians to include Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim, all of blessed memory, saying the best was yet to come.
