Tee-Y Mix: Why I don’t produce Wizkid, Olamide, Davido

In the past, Temitayo Ibitoye, better known as Tee-Y Mix, produced some of the finest musicians in the Nigeria, including Naeto C, Sound Sultan, 9ice, Darey, Banky W, late Kefee and Sasha. But in recent times, it has been hard for him to cross paths with the likes of Olamide, Wizkid and Davido, who appear to the leaders of the new sound.

Has he lost his magic? He says there is nothing like.

He told our correspondent that he was not in any competition with younger producers but trying to build his own artistes and record label.

He stated, “For me, I think it is about a slight shift in my priority, which is building my own thing. I want to start building people more from the button as opposed to chasing popular names. I’ve been doing that in the last four years of my career. I’m part of the pioneers of the new sound and I also like the fact that we have lots of younger people coming up because it adds flavour to the industry. And since I don’t tag most things I do, you would think I have been quiet but I am not. We have over 80 songs produced and ready to go on my record label and I produced them all.”

He adds that working with the emerging artistes is the only way to shape music, insisting that the like of Olamide, Davido and others have already developed their styles and sounds.

Presently, he has just one artiste on his label, Vivace Records.

The graduate of University of Abuja says his two other artistes, Immaculate and Oyinkanade, left after irreconcilable differences and he has nothing against them.

“Right now, I have just one artiste, IB Josh. Immaculate and Oyinkanade are no more with me. But we are still in a good relationship. They left based on irreconcilable differences. In life, you win some and lose some. For me, relationship matters more than business or money. Yes, we are not working together anymore, but whatever it is that has been lost or invested on them will come back one way or the other.”

On marriage, he maintains that he will get married at the right time, regardless of the pressure that hits him daily.

“We live in a society where we place so much emphasis on marriage, but I don’t want to do it when there is no connection. I do not want to do it because everyone else is doing it. I have to be convinced that the person is right for me,” he said.
