Teenager bags one-year jail term for stealing employer’s recharge cards

A Chief Magistrate’s court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, on Friday sentenced an 18-year-old sales boy to one-year imprisonment for stealing his boss’ recharge cards worth N691,000.
The convict, Abdulkareem Ismail, was found guilty of the one-count charge of theft slammed on him by the police in the state and convicted by Chief Magistrate Habitat Basiru.
Ismail had been arraigned on September 3,  2014 and had pleaded not guilty of the offence.
Police prosecutor, Mr Sunday Ajayi, had informed the court that Ismail stole the recharge cards from his employer’s shop.
Ajayi said that the convict committed the offence on September 1, 2014 at about 9am, at suit 205, Olatundun Plaza, Igbono in Osogbo.
The stolen recharge cards worth N691,000 belonged  to one Alhaji Akinkunmi Alabi.
The prosecution explained that the offence committed by Ismail contravened Section 383, which is punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34 vol. 11, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.
Ismail had been granted bail by Chief Magistrate Basiru after his counsel, A. O. Sanusi, made an oral application for his bail.
The matter had been adjourned for hearing and the prosecution had presented the fact of the case, which showed that Ismail actually committed the offence, hence, his conviction.
Delivering her judgement on the case on Friday, Basiru, sentenced the boy to one-year imprisonment without any option of fine.
The defence counsel had during allocutus begged the court to temper justice with mercy.
