Teenager stabs friend to death over alcoholic drink

A 19-year-old Thomas Tertsea is currently facing trial at the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court for allegedly killing his friend, John Akpan, with a knife following a disagreement over an alcoholic drink.
A source said that the Tertsea stabbed the deceased to death at the Tiv Yam Market, Alaba-Rago in Ojo, Lagos.
The accused, a security guard, was arraigned on a charge of murder.
The Prosecutor, ASP Fidelis Dike, told the court that the accused committed the offence on August 22 at 1.40am at the Tiv Yam Market, Alaba-Rago in Ojo, Lagos.
Dike said the accused had stabbed the deceased, Akpan, with a knife on the neck during a scuffle.
He said, “The accused had earlier offered Akpan’s friend some dry gin with the intention that he would be given the remaining.
“Instead, the friend drank everything and this led to a scuffle between the two and they were immediately separated.
On that day, Akpan and his friend had accosted Tertsea and in the heat of the fight, Tertsea brought out a knife and stabbed the deceased.”
The offence contravened Section 228 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised), which stipulates death sentence for offenders.
The Magistrate, A.O. Salawu, said the accused should remain behind bars, pending legal advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions, while the case was adjourned to October 16.
