Members of staff and students of the Osun State University have been thrown into mourning as the Head, Civil Engineering Department of the institution, Engr. (Dr.) Moses Adebowale Ogunbiyi, slumped and died on the campus.
The HOD was said to have slumped and given up the ghost on the spot on Thursday while walking on campus.
This ugly development has thrown the six campuses of the state university into mourning as some academic activities in the department were cancelled to mourn Ogunbiyi.
The authorities confirmed the death of the HOD in an information made available to the students of the department on Thursday.
The department also suspended indefinitely the hostel to hostel campaign visit in order to mourn the senior lecturer.
Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, UNIOSUN branch, has expressed shock at the sudden demise of their colleague, who it described as pioneer member of the union.
In a release issued by the Branch Chairperson, M. O. Abanikannda, ASUU said the deceased committed himself to the service of the university and that of the union and died on duty.
It reads, “With a heavy heart but with absolute submission to the will of the Almighty, on behalf of all comrade members of ASUU UNIOSUN, I want to commiserate with ASUU UNIOSUN, the university community, faculty of engineering, department of civil engineering, and the Ogunbiyis, on the unfortunate demise of a beloved pioneer member of staff, who has consistently committed himself to the selfless service of our university community and beyond, Dr. M.O. Ogunbiyi.
“It is worth of note that Dr. Ogunbiyi, a former director of physical planning unit, and until this morning, the incumbent Ag. Head of the department of civil engineering, passed away in the course of exercising his civic responsibility to his union as a committed member of ASUU. May God Almighty, whose authority is unimpeachable, grant his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, the cause of the don’s death had yet to be ascertained.
