WAEC withholds Ogun public secondary schools’ results over govt’s indebtedness

The West African Examinations Council has withheld the results of the Senior Secondary School students in Ogun State public schools, who sat for the May /June edition, following the inability of the state government to pay the body their examination fees.
Investigations by our correspondent revealed that due to the state government’s indebtedness to WAEC, students who sat for this year’s SSCE, written between May and June, had been barred by the examination body from accessing their results on its website.
Although officials of the examination body at the Onikolobo, Abeokuta branch of WAEC declined to comment on the issue, an inside source confirmed to our correspondent that the council had withheld the results of the students of public schools in the state because the state government had yet to pay their examination fees. Parents whose children participated in the examination have become worried and have been lamenting the delay in the release of the results by WAEC.
They wondered why the Governor Ibikunle Amosun-led administration had found it difficult to settle the examination fees of the public schools with WAEC, inspite of its avowed passion for education.
When contacted by our correspondent, the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Modupe Mujota, said that the government was working assiduously to resolve the matter with WAEC.
Mojota disclosed that she had been communicating with WAEC on the matter with a view to finding an urgent solution to the nonrelease of the students’ results.
“I have been in conversation with WAEC already and there is work in progress,” she said.
The commissioner, however, expressed confidence that the ongoing discussions between the state government and the authorities of the examination body would soon yield a meaningful result.
