2023 AFCON Qualifier: Ekong, Bonke out of São Tomé and Príncipe clash

Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro will be without the services of two players when his side faces off with São Tomé and Príncipe in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

It was confirmed that Watford central defender William Troost-Ekong and Lorient defensive midfielder Innocent Bonke were not part of the traveling squad that landed in Morocco on Sunday morning.

Troost-Ekong suffered an injury against Sierra Leone at the National Stadium in Abuja three days ago, leading to his substitution in the 82nd minute.

Meanwhile, Bonke, for the third consecutive match, will not be available for the match, as he is still recovering from an injury he sustained against Mexico two weeks ago.

Leon Balogun, Kenneth Omeruo and Chidozie Awaziem are the potential candidates to replace Troost-Ekong in central defence and another option could see Calvin Bassey play as the left-sided centre-back in a 3-5-2 formation.

The match against São Tomé and Príncipe is scheduled to take place at the Stade Adrar, Agadir on Monday, June 13, 2022.

After the opening round of matches in Group A of 2023 AFCON Qualifying, the Super Eagles are second in the table with three points, the same number of points as table toppers Guinea Bissau who have a superior goal difference.
