Dr Ali Inname, Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, on Tuesday, confirmed the death of 24 family members after eating poisonous food.

The commissioner, in a statement, said that the incident occurred on Monday in Danzanke village, Bargaja Ward, Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

Inname was quoted in the statement as saying that the incident was as a result of a chemical popularly called ‘Gishirin Lalle’ in Hausa Language.

”Regrettably, the entire family who ate the meal lost their lives, except two female members, who merely tasted the food and are currently responding to treatment with chances of survival.

”Attempts to save the lives of all the affected people by providing the needed medical care proved abortive,” it read said.

The statement urged members of the public to learn from the incidence by keeping the poisonous chemicals away from easy reach.

It further advised the people to always separate storage sites for food items from other agricultural and cosmetic items, saying that they should carefully check all ingredients and food stuff before use.

”Report to health facility or isolation camp in your area early when you observe any unusual symptoms or condition,” the statement read.
