Indigenes and other residents of Ndiboko Ote Village in Ezza Inyimagu Community of Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have been thrown into shock after a 28-year-old man allegedly murdered his father over money.
The suspect, simply identified as Nwamgbo, reportedly butchered his father, identified as Okereke Nwamgbo in the community, after the duo got into a heated argument over some amount of money meant to get a wife for the suspect.
It was gathered that the suspect, who was arrested by the Police while making an attempt to bury his deceased father in a shallow grave, slit his father’s throat with a knife after the deceased allegedly refused to give him a sum of N38,000.
A resident of the area, Nwegbara Aloh, told The Point that trouble broke out between the two men penultimate Saturday over who should keep the N38,000 meant to get a wife for the alleged assailant.
Aloh said the deceased had sensed that the money would be used by his son to buy Colorado, popularly known as “Colos” and other illicit substances if handed over to the suspect, so, he insisted on keeping it himself.
According the source, the suspect is a drug addict and his constant consumption of hard drugs has been a problem to his entire family.
As part of efforts at making him live decently, the family decided to get him married.
“Nwangbo (suspect) is always under the influence of colos and other hard drugs and this has been troubling his parents and other family members. So, they decided to get a wife for him with the hope that she would make him responsible.
“Because they don’t have money, his parents leased their piece of land in the village for N38,000 to get a wife for him, believing that such plan would change his life.
“Unfortunately, after the money had been paid to them, the Nwangbo (suspect) suddenly accosted his father at night and requested that the money be given to him.
Following the old man’s refusal, the son brought out a well-sharpened cutlass and began to thrust it on the father until he died,” the source narrated.
It was gathered that after the dastardly act, the alleged assailant woke up early in the morning and started digging a shallow grave to bury the remains of his father.
“But, he was caught in the process by youths of the area who later handed him over to police operatives from the Iboko Divisional Police headquarters for prosecution,” Aloh added.
Another resident, Mrs Eucharia Nwibo, explained that the young man had, in the time past, apparently after taking substances, inflicted injuries on his mother’s head for no just cause.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ebonyi State, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident.
She said operatives at the Izzi Police Divisional Headquarters were already investigating the matter and would charge the suspect to court upon conclusion of the investigation.
