5 feared dead, many trapped in 21-storey Lagos building collapse

Many workers were feared trapped in a 21-storey building, under construction, which collapsed on Gerard Road, Ikoyi, Lagos on Monday.

An eyewitness told the News Agency of Nigeria on condition of anonymity that the building collapsed around 2.30 pm.

The eyewitness, who also worked on the site, said that five dead bodies were seen at the top of the rubbles of the collapsed building.

He added that two persons had, so far, been rescued alive.

NAN reporter also saw two bodies being removed from the rubbles shortly before emergency responders, comprising officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, National Emergency Management Agency and the Lagos Building Control Agency, arrived at the building site.

As at 4:50 pm., no official rescue operation had begun.

NAN reports that angry youths and some of the workers were seen carrying out rescue operation.

Excavators from some of the agencies were still being awaited as at 5:45 pm. while crowd control remained a challenge at the scene.
