Nigeria has again lost a young female golfer, Georgia Oboh, to the United States. She is a granddaughter of a prominent golfer in Nigeria.
Oboh has made a name for herself in the US as she goes round the golfing centres with great aspirations and hope.
The Nigeria’s teen sensation was last year’s world teen champion. And she is set to continue the trend at next week’s USGA junior girls qualifier in Florida after an impressive outing at the recent US women’s Open qualifier.
Speaking with Golf Digest, Oboh’s mother Evelyn Oboh said her daughter would continue to make steady progress on her way to becoming Nigerian’s first global female golf star.
“Georgia put in a good performance and made herself proud in the elite field. She had scores of 75 in the morning round and 73 in the afternoon’s (36-hole tournament for a total of 148). Leading score was 137 from one professional and another leading 17-year-old amateur, who is representing the USA in 2016 Burtis Cup.
It was the best outing for the youngster, who picked the sport from her late grandfather, who was an active player at the Ikeja golf Club from an early age.
Her mother called on individuals and corporate bodies to support Georgia as she continues to fly the country’s flag round the whole world.
“This has been her best scores in the qualifiers to date and at age 15, her performance is very commendable. To move forward, Georgia still needs support of the corporate bodies to be able to afford the high-fees training and travelling with her team. We hope that this result will encourage potential sponsors to see the terrific talent in this young lady and come to her aid, while she is still young,” she said.
