No fewer than 69 children and 13 adults are currently suffering from sickle cell disorder in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, investigation has revealed.
Though the wife of the state governor, Dame Edith Okowa’s 05 Initiative has been on a rescue mission, investigation revealed that the initiative culminated in the establishment of sickle cell clinics in the state, with emphasis on the effective management of occasional
distress associated with the hereditary disorder.
At the commissioning of the sickle cell clinic in Eku Baptist Government Hospital, Dame Okowa noted that the mission of the 05 Initiative was in line with the prosperity agenda of the current administration, aimed at giving hope to the hopeless and transforming lives.
“The 05 Initiative has established five sickle cell clinics in Agbor, Kwale, Oleh, Sapele and Ughelli. So far, we have recorded huge successes in all the centres where we already have committed genetic councilors, who attend to patients on a daily basis,” she said.
